WiFi hotspots across the country soon in public places

download (1)The government is planning to facilitate internet service to the mass people by setting up WiFi hotspots in different public areas across the country.

As a result, educational institutions, union level markets, bus and launch terminals will come under the WiFi facility, according to the target of the project ‘Development of National ICT Infra-Network for Bangladesh Government Phase 3’.

The Information and Communication Technology Division organised a workshop on ‘Info Government-3: What we want’ at the Bangladesh Computer Council auditorium on Saturday.

Telecom and ICT Minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui said at the workshop that the planning should be made giving priority the rural areas so that there remains no gap between village and town in ICT development.

He said the real development could not happen without involving marginal people.

State Minister for Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Zunaid Ahmed Palak said under this project, the government will also install optical fibre cables, 25,000 IP phones and 4,500 biometric data centres in Upazilas.

He added that it has also plan to set up routers in government offices where Internet is available so that visitors can be brought under network.

“Though many think the plan would be tough to implement, I don’t think it would be impossible at all,” the state minister said.

Mr Palak said they already proposed the state-owned mobile operator Teletalk to install the WiFi hotspots.

The minister mentioned that a $160-million proposal was made for the ‘Info Government-3’ project.

ICT Secretary Nazrul Islam Khan said they hoped to start the project next year after final approval.
