Tanneries will be shifted to Savar by December 2014

The tanneries of the capital’s Hazaribagh area will be shifted to Savar by December next year in line with a tripartite MOU signed yesterday between two apex bodies of the sector and the government.

Besides, the entire establishment work of the tannery area would be completed by the end of the year 2016.

Director of BSCIC, Patit Paban Baidya, chairman of Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leather Goods and Footwear Exporters’ Association (BFFLLFEA), Hazi Md Belal Hossain, and chairman of Bangladesh Tanners’ Association (BTA), Md Shahin Ahmed inked the MOU on behalf of their respective sides.

The much-talked-about MOU was signed at a function at a local hotel in the city, jointly organised by The Asia Foundation and South Asian Network of Economic Modeling (SANEM).

Industries Minister Dilip Barua, Lawmaker Barrister Fazle Noor Taposh, Acting Industries Secretary Joynal Abedin Bhuiyan, BSCIC Chairman Shyam Sundar Sikder were present at the signing, among others.

Speakers at the function said export earnings from leather and leather goods can easily be raised to $5 billion soon from the current level of $1 billion, leveraging the comparative advantage of the sector.

Pointing out that comparative advantage of the sector is greater than RMG sector, they urged the government to quickly release Tk 250 crore compensation allocated for the shifting.

As per the agreement, besides providing compensation to 155 factories, the government would allocate Tk 6.39 billion for installation of a Central Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) – a must for red-category factories discharging toxic chemicals.

Providing soft loans to tanners and the retaining of their existing bank guarantees and mortgage facilities in Savar Leather Industrial Estate were also among their demands.

The industry experts also stressed on ensuring accommodation, treatment and education facilities for the workers’ families in the industrial estate of Savar. Giving the full credit of establishing the park to the grand alliance government, Industries Minister said, “The shifting of the tanneries from Hazaribagh to Savar is a historical initiative.???
