RMG exports to Japan on the rise

rmg-to-japanRMG  export to Japan is on the rise thanks to the Far East island nation’s attempts to reduce its import dependency on China.

As part of the move, the country’s garment manufacturers have been exempt from paying the 17 percent duty upon entry to Japan.

In fiscal 2012-13, the country exported $478.48 million worth of garment products to Japan, up 18.5 percent year-on-year, according to data from Export Promotion Bureau.

The upward trend in exports to Japan is an extraordinary feat, given how quality conscious Japanese customers are, said a garment owner preferring not to be named.

“It is great that we could raise our quality to the Japanese customers’ expectations,??? said Atiqul Islam, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, the garment makers’ platform.

Meanwhile, the exports can increase further in the near future, as Japan’s 16 trillion garment, accessory and footwear is now “back on track???, according to a recent study by Impact Economy, an investment firm based in Switzerland.

The study said that South Asian countries which include Bangladesh, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand and Myanmar will collectively supply more than 30 percent of total garment imports to Japan within a few years.
