Mobile phone users reach 11.62cr in May

MahmudOpu-20130527-0024The active mobile phone users of the country reached to 11.62 crore in May as five out of six mobile phone operators added six lakh new subscribers over the month.

The active mobile users were 11.56 crore in April after the number had dropped to 11.52 crore in March from 11.58 crore in February.

In March, the number of mobile phone subscribers had declined after a 15-month rise as Robi had lost 16.75 lakh subscribers in the month.

The latest data of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission showed that Grameenphone, Banglalink, Robi, Citycell and state-run Teletalk added new subscribers in May while Airtel witnessed fall in the number.

Leading mobile operator GP added 2.41 lakh new subscribers in May taking its total user base to 4.90 crore. Banglalink added 1.77 lakh new subscribers in the month which took its total subscriber base to 2.96 crore.

Robi only added 15,000 new subscribers in the month which took its total users to 2.40 crore.

Citycell’s total subscribers reached to 14.33 lakh in May by adding 8,000 new users in the month while Teletalk’s total subscribers reached to 35.25 lakh by adding 1.83 lakh new subscribers.

Airtel witnessed a decline in subscriber number as it lost 12,000 subscribers in May which took its total users to 84.91 crore.

The number of active mobile phone subscribers in the country increased by 1.66 crore or 17 per cent in 2013 as the total users of the six mobile opera tors reached to 11.37 crore at the end of the year.

The BTRC data showed that the total number of mobile phone subscribers had increased by 13.70 per cent in 2012 as the total subscribers were 9.71 crore in December of the year.
