Japanese investment in planned Chittagong zones sought

CHITTAGONG, Mar 12: A senior Japanese diplomat has placed importance on the private sector dialogue to foster trade and investment between Bangladesh and Japan.

Hiroyuki Minami, deputy chief of mission at the Japanese Embassy in Dhaka,  stated this while exchanging views with president of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mahbubul Alam at the latter’s Chamber office at the World Trade Center in Chittagong Wednesday morning.

Vice president of the CCCI Syed Jamal Ahmed and honourary consul of Japan in Chittagong Md Nurul Islam were present.

Minami said that trade and business are the major elements of economic development. Regarding Chittagong as a suitable place for trade and commerce, he said both the nations should work together for stronger bond of relation in near future.

He highly spoke of Bangladesh marching forward with great possibilities in spite of infrastructural and administrative bottlenecks.

Citing examples of Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, he laid stress on the creation of environment of trade and commerce and quick disposal of the imported cargoes by the Customs authority.

CCCI president Mahbubul Alam stated that Japan is the true friend of Bangladesh and the Japan Government has been contributing immensely to the socio-economic development of Bangladesh.

Chittagong is located in the middle of the SAARC and ASEAN region and is also the gateway to Bangladesh, said Alam adding Chittagong has been considered as the regional hub for its immense economic possibilities.

He sought all-out cooperation of Japan Embassy in Dhaka in encouraging the Japanese for investment in the special economic zones at Mirsarai and Anwara of Chittagong.
