Three companies – GrameenPhone, Unilever and BSRM-received the Standard Chartered-Financial Express Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Award-2014 at a function in the city Wednesday.

Finance Minister AMA Muhith handed over the 5th SCB-FE CSR awards to the recipients as chief guest at the function held at the Hotel Radisson in the capital.

Mr. Vivek Sood, CEO of Grameenphone, Mr. Alihussain Akberali, Chairman of BSRM Group of Companies, and Mr. Chowdhury Hasan Mazhar, Product Group Manager of Unilever Bangladesh, received the awards on behalf of their respective companies.

Bangladesh Bank governor Dr. Atiur Rahman and Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) CEO Jim McCabe, among others, spoke on the occasion.

In his speech the finance minister highlighted the importance of everybody’s contribution to betterment of the society.

“As society has given us a lot, so we’ve many things to do for the society,” the finance minister said.

Speaking on the occasion, the Bangladesh Bank Governor lauded the SCB-FE initiative encouraging non-bank corporate entities in the field of corporate social responsibility (CSR).

CSR Award Committee Member Dr. Hafiz G.A. Siddiqi announced the names of the award winning companies.

The Financial Express (FE) Editor Moazzem Hossain gave the vote of thanks.

Earlier in his speech Mr. Jim McCabe, CEO of the SCB, congratulated the winners and said: “Vision with action has the power to change the world. CSR efforts that combine a vision with tangible action can benefit Bangladesh for sustainable economic growth.”

Grameenphone (GP): Grameenphone is the largest mobile telecom operator in Bangladesh. It is a joint venture enterprise between Telenor (55.8 per cent), the largest telecommunications service provider in Norway with mobile phone operations in 12 other countries, and Grameen Telecom Corporation (34.2 per cent), a non-profit organisation of Bangladesh. The other 10 per cent shares belong to general retail and institutional investors. GP is a listed company with both the bourses.

Unilever: Unilever is the Dutch food and cosmetic giant manufacturing fast-moving consumer goods. Unilever’s vision is to double its size by reducing environmental footprint and increasing positive social impact. Launched in 2010, the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan is the blueprint for sustainable growth by reducing waste in energy, raw materials and manufacturing thereby creating efficiencies and cutting costs.
