Mobile phone operator Grameenphone in partnership with two internet service providers launched Wimax broadband internet service under the brand name ‘go broadband’, said officials on Wednesday (23 April 2014).

The ISP operators — ADN Telecom Ltd and Agni Systems Ltd — will provide the spectrum while GP will provide the logistic support and distribution channel, they said at a press briefing in the capital on the day.

‘We have 28MHz spectrum, 14 MHz each,’ ADN managing director Asif Mahmood said.

He, however, said that the two ISPs would not bundle their spectrum while providing the service.

‘We will offer fixed Wimax without the mobility. But the service will be of superior quality,’ he said.

Asked why the price of the modem of ‘go broadband’ is higher than other modems available in the market, Asif said, ‘Other companies subsidise modems, which we are not doing.’

Agni Systems managing director Abdus Salam said that both the ISPs were serving the corporate market for a long time and now decided to go for mass market.
