Grameen Phone wins Global Mobile Award 2014

Grameenphone, the market leader of cellular operator in the country, has won the 19th Annual Global Mobile Award.

Grameenphone won “The Green Mobile Award??? for climate its change programme on Tuesday, at a programme held at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Grameenphone Chief Technical Officer Tanveer Mohammad received the award on behalf of the company.

This year, GSMA has declared 32 awards in different categories.

The winners were honoured in a ceremony hosted by British actor, writer, presenter and comedian James Corden in the afternoon.

Corden entertained nominees and attendees with a comic introduction to the ceremony.

Jon Fredrik Baksaas, chairman of GSMA and also the president and CEO of Telenor Group, GSMA Director General Anne Bouverot and CEO of GSMA LtdJohn Hoffman joined Corden on stage to present the awards.

Meanwhile, the representatives from category sponsor Maxim Integrated, media partners CNBC, Fortune and Time and members of the judging panel who co-presented awards, also joined Corden.

Baksaas is also the president of Telenor group, which has lions share in Bangladesh’s largest mobile operator Grameenphone.

Grameenphone is a joint venture enterprise between Telenor (55.8%), the largest telecommunications service provider in Norway with mobile phone operations in 12 other countries, and Grameen Telecom Corporation (34.2%), a non-profit organisation of Bangladesh.

The other 10% shares belong to general retail and institutional investors.

“Now in the 19th year, the Global Mobile Awards once again showcase the outstanding level of innovation and creative products and services being developed across a diverse and growing industry,??? said John Hoffman.

“With more than 680 high calibre entries this year, the competition was stronger than ever and it is a significant achievement to have been honoured today. The GSMA would like to warmly congratulate all Global Mobile Awards winners and recognise all those who took part for continuing to drive mobile communications into the future,??? he said.

Vivek Sood said: “It is a great honour to receive this prestigious award on behalf of all employees of Grameenphone. This is the result of the extensive efforts for utilising energy more effectively in order to reduce negative environmental effects stemming primarily from CO2 emissions.???

“This is not the end of our journey, but recognition of the continuing effort. We also acknowledge the support from Telenor Group in these efforts,??? the CEO of Grameenphone added.

From Telenor’s perspective, another venture also won awards in this gala event. Telenor Pakistan won two awards; one in ‘Best NFC/Mobile Money Product or Service’ category and another in ‘Best Mobile Product or Service for Women in Emerging Markets’ category jointly with Tameer Micro Finance Bank for Easypaisa.

This year, some other highlighted awards are ‘Best Low-Cost Smartphone (sub-$150 wholesale price)’ went to Nokia Lumia 520. They also won the ‘Best Entry-Level or Featurephone’ award.

‘Most Innovative Device Manufacturer of the Year’ went to LG while ‘Best Mobile Tablet Apple’ award was given to the iPad Air.
