Export Processing Zones Authority to declare new wage structure by January

The Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) is going to declare new wage structure for the workers of the country’s Export Processing Zones (EPZs) by January next.

As the revised wages of the garments workers outside EPZs has come into effect from December 1, 2013, the BEPZA authority is also working to declare new wage structure for the workers of the EPZs by January next, said Nazma Binte Alamgir, General Manager of BEPZA.

According to the BEPZA, the workers of the garments factories within the zones enjoy more wages than the workers of the factories outside the EPZs. BEPZA data said that the EPZ authority classified the industries in three sections, garments and other related industries; electronics, electrical and other related industries; and textiles and chemical industries and other related industries.

The helper in garment sector get $ 48 per month as minimum wage, while junior operator in electronics, electrical and other related industries get $ 58 and un-skilled workers in textiles and chemical industries and other related industries get $ 53.

According to the previous wage structures of the workers, helper in garment factories outside EPZs used to get $37.97 (Tk. 3000) while the helper level workers in garment factories with EPZs get $48 (Tk. 3792) (1 USD = 79 Tk.).

Following the demand of the workers of the garment sector, the government in November last had declared new wage structure that allows helper level workers get $67.09 (Tk 5300) per month as minimum wage.

Sources said that the BEPZA is now working to make a new wage structure which is likely to be declared by January next. It would come into effect from December 1 last, the date when the workers of the garment factories would enjoy new wage structure.

Nazma Binte Alamgir while talking to this correspondent said that as the workers of the factories of EPZs work in a special zone, they enjoy a special wage.
