‘China to fund garment palli, DITF venue’

TofaelCommerce Minister Tofail Ahmed said China would finance establishing of Garment Palli, a permanent venue for Dhaka International Trade Fair and a display centre of local products.

Besides, the country has also assured of allowing duty-free access for all Bangladeshi products, he said.

The minister was talking to the journalists after attending a views exchange with a delegation from China’s Yunnan Province government at his office in Dhaka yesterday.

Governor Li Jiheng led the delegation which included high officials from the provincial government.

Describing China a “close friend of Bangladesh,??? Tofail Ahmed said the Chinese government already granted duty-free access for some types of Bangladeshi products.

“But we urged them for making all Bangladeshi products duty-free. They assured us.???

He said China had also shown high interest to expand their business in Bangladesh.

Official data showed Bangladesh earned $458m from exporting to China against an import of $6,324m during last fiscal year.

Bangladesh suffered a trade deficit of $5,865m with the world’s second largest economy.

“As part of our efforts to reduce this trade gap, we urged China for allowing duty-free access for all products,??? Tofail Ahmed said.

Stressing the need for regional connectivity to boost trade with China and the South Asian countries, the commerce minister added the government was trying to build connections with China, India and Myanmar.

Commerce Secretary Mahbub Ahmed and Export Promotion Bureau’s vice chairman Shubhashish Bose were also present in the meeting.
