Apparel industry wage gazette published

The government yesterday published a gazette notification on minimum wages for garment workers, making new pay effective from December 1, Labour Secretary Mikail Shipar said.

The gazette is available on the labour ministry’s website. There is no change in the provisions the stakeholders had earlier agreed on, Shipar said.

On November 21, the wage board finalised the salary structure increasing it by 77 percent to Tk 5,300 a month.

Under the new wage structure, a Grade-7 worker will receive Tk 3,000 in basic salary in addition to Tk 1,200 in house rents, Tk 250 for medical purposes, Tk 200 for transport and Tk 650 as food subsidy.

A trainee or apprentice worker will get Tk 4,810 as the minimum salary. The initial working period for a trainee will be three months, which could be extended for another three months in case of a lack of improvement in standards.

After that period, trainees will be appointed as permanent workers under Grade 7, the lowest rung.

Workers will get a 5 percent increment on their basic salary a year, which was absent in the previous structure. A worker’s salary cannot be decreased from the current level, if his or her existing salary surpasses the new wage structure, according to the gazette.

The food subsidy cannot be reduced either, if a factory was providing higher allowances for food than the new structure. “I would urge the factory owners to implement the new wage in time and properly,??? said Sirajul Islam, workers’ representative in the wage board.
Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association should instruct its members to implement the new salary structure, he said.
