Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed said the country’s export growth was 18 per cent in US market last fiscal year (FY), 2013-14, despite suspension of Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) facility for a long time.

He was speaking at the concluding ceremony of the Training Programme for Economic Journalists at the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) in the city Monday. The three-day training programme was jointly organised by PIB and Economic Reporters’ Forum (ERF).

The minister said there has been no GSP facility from the US to any country since last November due to the expiry of the timeframe.

The minister said if the US government ever provides GSP to any country, Bangladesh will be able to achieve the facility.

He said Bangladesh is now the second largest readymade garment (RMG) exporter in the world but there are local and international conspiracies around the country’s RMG sector.

Tofail said the Accord and the Alliance along with Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) have inspected more than 2,000 RMG factories in order to observe the working conditions at the units and found that most of them have been maintaining compliance.

He said the future of the five factories of Tuba group depends on its owner. If he wants to run his factories, they could go for production. Managing Director and Chief Editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) – the state-run news agency – Abul Kalam Azad, ERF President Sultan Mahmud Badal and its General Secretary Sazzadur Rahman were also present on the occasion.
