The Declaration of Accession on the “Partnership for Sustainable Textiles” was signed at a programme on Sunday, attended by Hans-Joachim Fuchtel, the German Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Fuchtel is now visiting Bangladesh to attend the three-day Dhaka Apparel Summit 2014 that began on Sunday.

During the visit, he would be promoting the “Partnership for Sustainable Textiles,” which aims at social, environmental and economic improvements in the country’s RMG sector.

The four companies, which have a combined annual turnover of 580 million euro and employ about 35,000 workers, have already been collaborating with GIZ, the German development agency and KfW, the German development bank, for many years to improve their social and environmental standards.

During the time of cooperation with Bangladeshi RMG enterprises, about 100,000 workers, factory managers, owners and labour inspectors have been trained on safety standards in the RMG sector.

Fuchtel said that the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development has already invested 10 million euro in the “Partnership” and promises additional funds of 6.0 million euro.”
