BGMEA to hold meeting with Global RMG Retailers to boost up their confidence

imagesIn a major breakthrough, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) is finally going to hold a meeting with the global retailers on February 3 in a bid to restore confidence among the buyers, who were traumatised by the recent political turmoil and labour unrests.

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed is scheduled to attend the meeting as chief guest and would brief the global retailers about country’s latest political as well as business situation.

Among others, the EU-based “Accord??? and north America-based “Alliance for Bangladesh worker Safety??? and International Labour Organisation (ILO) will attend the meeting as the stakeholders.

The meeting is aimed at updating the potential buyers about the improved latest political situation in

Bangladesh, so the global retailers would be cheered up in choosing Bangladesh for buying more RMG products following such an image repairing meeting.

“Bangladesh has rightly come back to its own track as the overall political situation has already been improved,??? Shahidullah Azim, Vice President of BGMEA, told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday.

We would like to rightly inform the global potential buyers as well as the stakeholders that the country’s business environment has now been quite stable by holding this meeting, he added.

The country’s readymade garments witnessed 40% decline in orders for the spring-winter season due

to the political unrest in the last few months, according to RMG industry insiders.

In December last year, the buyers have expressed concern over the security of their investment due to the recent violence, especially after the torching of Standard Group garment factory.

They had also threatened to leave the country and to switch to an alternative outsourcing from another countries, until and unless the political unrest is over and work place security is ensured.
