10,710 vehicles carried exportable apparel, other goods in 12 days

indexThe initiatives of the highway police and BGMEA to transport RMG products on Dhaka-Chittagong route under police escort has put a positive effect as a total of 10,710 trucks and covered vans laden with apparel products and other commodities have been transported during the first 12 days of this month amidst blockade.

The Highway Police Department in association with the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has taken initiatives to transport goods laden truck and covered van through police escort on the route to ensure on time shipment of apparel products.

From November 30 to December 12, a total of 10,710 trucks and covered van have been transported successfully on Dhaka-Chittagong highway, sources said.

The highway police, however, is ready to keep the initiatives alive from Tuesday, the first day of another spell of 72-hour blockade, enforced by the BNP-led 18-party alliance.

Md. Asaduzzaman Mia PPM, Deputy Inspector General of Bangladesh Police Highway Range Dhaka while talking to this correspondent said that they are well-set to ensure safe transportation of the vehicles under police escort from Tuesday.

“We have two types of security measures: one is police escort during hartal and blockade while the other is giving security at different spots on the highway to avert any misdeed during the normal days???.

Sources from BGMEA said that a total of 7110 covered vans and trucks laden with RMG products have been transported during the mentioned days under police escort.

Of the mentioned quantity, 95 vehicles were transported on November 30 last while 230 on December 1. On December 2, a total of 310 RMG goods-laden vehicles were transported on Dhaka-Chittagong highway while the number was 350 on December 3 night.

On the night of December 4, the BGMEA have transported a total of 360 vehicles. In the night on December 6, the number was 350 while it was 520 on December 7 night.

Some 430 vehicles laden with RMG goods were transported under police escort on December 8 while it was 250 and 375 on the following two days.

The BGMEA has transported 790 RMG goods laden vehicles in the nights of December 11 and 12. Apart from the said number, a total of 200 vehicles laden with RMG products were added to the convoy of highway police from Comilla and Feni areas.

Highway Police sources said that they also transported vehicles laden with other commodities. Sources said that a total of 3600 types of goods including vegetables and other essentials were transported under police escort, totaling the number of vehicles to 10710.

Riaz Bin Mahmud, BGMEA Vice-President while talking to this correspondent said, on an average, 1000 trucks were transported under the police escort. Usually over 5000 vehicles ply on the Dhaka-Chittagong route, he added.

Mentionable, highway police along with BGMEA has taken the initiative to transport garments and others goods on Dhaka Chittagong highway with special police escort during the ongoing blockade.
